Checklist for When You Move Apartments

Moving home is one of the most stressful things that you are supposed to do in life so it’ hardly surprising that when you move apartments, your mind is a blur of things to do and remember before, during and after the big move. To help alleviate the stress, in this article we take a look at some of the things you need to remember to do.
Keys
Keys are vital when it comes to moving apartments. You not only need to think about obtaining the keys to your new apartment but handing back old keys too. During your tenancy you may have had spare sets of keys made and distributed them to friends, family members or neighbours as necessary. Before you move apartment, you need to ensure you round all of these keys up in order to return them to the landlord or letting agent.
Round up keys from friends, family and neighbours

Once you get the keys to your new apartment, it’s then important to remember to get additional sets cut to distribute to those friends or family members that may need access to your apartment in emergencies. However, before getting new keys cut, make sure that this is allowed based on your tenancy agreement.
Power
When it comes to gas and electric, there are a number of things to remember. Firstly, contact your power company well in advance of your move and advise them of the date you will be vacating your current apartment and what your new address will be. In most instances, they should be able to continue supplying you with gas or electricity in your new apartment although you may wish to change companies. On your final day in your apartment, make sure you read all the meters and notify the companies in question so they can produce you a final bill for settlement.

Remember to take meter readings.

Once you arrive at your new apartment, make sure that one of the first things you do is to take the meter readings and advise your power companies. This will ensure that you only get billed for the power you use after moving into the apartment.
Update Address Details
It can often be difficult to know who to notify when you move apartments. On your list should be your employer, your bank, insurance companies and your family doctor. You may also want to formally notify friends and family members to make sure everyone can contact you as required. Finally, arrange with the mail company to redirect your post for a couple of months. This will not only ensure that mail reaches you at your new address but also alerts you to people or companies who you haven’t told about your new address.
Telecommunications
Just as you need to update your energy providers that you are moving house, you will also have to notify the companies who supply you with pay-per-view television, a phone line and internet access to make sure that they disconnect your previous address and set everything up to work at your new apartment.
